Caravelas is one of the oldest towns in Brazil, founded in 1503 during an expedition led by Amerigo Vespucci. The old town centre is small but very nice, with a typical Portuguese baroque architecture, stands at the River Caravelas’s bank.
Its marine park “Abrolhos” is among the best places for diving: actually, it is reckoned as one of the best diving spots in the world.
The period from July to November is the “season of Jubarte whales”, when the cetaceans stay in the Marine Park to reproduce and wean the pups.
